Redneck Floorpans

Posted by Jason under 66 Coupe

It’s after Christmas and I’ve started to tear down the car.   My first move was to get a better idea of what condition the floors were in.  I could tell from the bottom side that they were rusted out but there was some sort of replacement sheet metal on top of the original pan.

Out go the seats and carpet at least what was left of the carpet.  It had gotten wet far too many times and simply ripped apart as I pulled it up.  The seat frames are rusty but I’ll be able to clean them up and refinish them with a new upholstery kit and new rails.

I cant believe it!  The floor has been covered with scrap metal, beaten and cut into shape and sheet metal screws hold the pieces into place. In some cases the head on the sheet metal screws has been ground off so I had to remove them with a grinder.  Once I got the scrap metal out, there wasn’t much left of the floors.  I’m not too worried about replacing them, what I am worried about is the condition of the frame rail extensions under the floorpan. I don’t know how to make sure that they are properly aligned should I have to cut them off and put new ones on.

Getting started.

The car was delivered to my house without a steering wheel and without a battery. I ordered a Grant classic style wheel and a battery tray from Mustangs-Unlimited.  I also picked up a battery from the local Walmart.   They tray ended up being incorrect for my year.  I accidentally ordered a 67-68 tray.  The old tray is still usable, but is peppered with holes from battery acid.

Once I got the car started, I realized that every single bushing under the front end is toast. The front end would probably fall out from under the car if I were to try and drive it. I managed to get the car turned around and pulled it into the garage.
