Inner Fender and Core Support

Posted by Jason under 66 Coupe

Making the replacement inner fender piece I order fit turned out to be a pain in the butt.  It just didn’t fit well enough.  I dont know if it was just a bad piece or if all of them are the same.  Regardless I ended up ordering another which was produced by Scott Drake.  I still have to do some tweaking on the sheetmetal but it’s a far better fit than the other import produced version.

I also decided that the core support had to go.  It could have been salvaged but it was eaten up over by the battery, the top edge was beat up, and it appears as it it was damage in a fender bender at some point and was pushed in next to the left inner fender. The left inner fender was also slightly bent from the same apparent cause.

New Core Support

I began the day by drilling out the spot welds on the core support.  This time, unlike the right inner fender, I use a spot weld drill bit.  I can’t quantify how much time this bit saved me but it was by a large margin easier to use over a regular drill bit.   It produces a large hole in the piece your drilling through so keep that in mind if you plan to reuse the sheet metal.  I didn’t measure the hole size but I believe it’s about 3/8″.
