I’ve been vacationing over the past month and not much has progressed on the mustang as a result. However I did commit to the passenger quarter panel after tweaking the alingment of the body parts. The wheelhouse is now welded into place. I need to grind down a few of the messy welds and paint so this area won’t rust. After that I just need to weld up the quarter panel. One more adjustment to make sure it’s aligned well since I took it off to weld up the wheelhouse and Im done with this side.

The skin I purchased initially seemed to fit nicely. But now that I am actually trying to fit it to the car, it’s taking a lot of tweaking. The “C” scoop lines are too high by about 1/2 inch, so I’ve had to snip the corners and hammer and dolly the fold that rests on the rocker panel. It’s a lot of work but its kinda fun and rewarding. I clamped my American design trunck drop off panel in place and it didn’t seem to match up very well with the quarter skin. How did yours line up? Another thing I need to do is check the rear valence to make sure there are no large gaps with the new skin. Man, there is a lot of things that need to line up before welding! I have had that quarter skin on and off the car about 20 times!!
I had to make a similar adjustment on the full quarter so it would fit the rocker panel. I’d bet that i had the quarter panel on and off the car 25-30 times before I was satisfied with the fit of the wheelhouse and quarter panel. I’ve read the trunck drop off is over sized and has to be trimmed to fit depending on the year. It makes sense because mine is oversized for my ‘66. I’ve added a large number of ‘vise-grip’ style clamps to my tool box. I ended up buying a large number of Chinese made locking C clamps with swivels because I could get 5 of them for the price of one Vise-Grip clamp. I hate to buy overseas when I can get a domestic product but $15 for one clamp is too much. Sorry Irwin Industrial Tools but geez! (Im not even sure if their tools are made here, i cant find it on their website)
Yeah, I agree, Irwin tools are just too expensive. I purchased all of my tools at northern tool. A set of 5 locking C-clamps for $24. 2 locking pliers with smaller heads to fit in between metal lips(cowl area front and rear deck filler panel where the trunk lid weatherstrip rests) for $16, a set of 4 locking pliers for $15 and a really nice plug weld pliers for $25. Those pliers are great. On one jaw, it is a split fork on the top to fit around the hole you need to fill, and the back jaw is made out of copper to adsorb heat and prevent blowing through. I still do not have the quarter welded on, but the trunk floor drop off, rear outer wheel house and the rear deck panel(between rear window and trunk lid) have been replaced. Looks like you are making good progress.
